May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness month and May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness month and there’s *so much* I could say on this topic, but I’m choosing to prioritize my own mental health by releasing myself from internal pressure to post prolifically, profoundly, or perfectly, so I will just say this:

If there’s any part of your motherhood or parenting journey that is hard, painful, or not what you expected, you’re not alone. I see you. ❤️

Communicating with others about difficult topics i Communicating with others about difficult topics is not easy for many people. This is especially true for those of us who grew up socialized to be pleasing and pleasant, or who learned from an early age that asserting oneself was not safe to do.

Something I frequently remind my clients, whether in the therapy space, or in their day to day lives, is this:

You get to choose what you say, when you say it, how you say it, or IF you say it.

Whether it’s with me or anyone else! You have control over these things.

Included in this concept are these additional reminders:

✨No one is *entitled* to your story. You can share what you choose, what is helpful for you, and what you feel safe to share with others. Or not.
✨No is a complete answer. End stop.
✨You don’t have to justify your boundaries to others.
Here’s a reminder to pause and check in with you Here’s a reminder to pause and check in with yourself. When you’re overwhelmed, overstimulated, or feeling unsure about something, ask yourself this question.
One of my primary focuses as a therapist is helpin One of my primary focuses as a therapist is helping clients find ways to hold space for multiple truths to coexist at the same time, even when they seem to contradict each other.

So often, we default to extremes in how we think about ourselves and the world, including all or nothing mentalities. A lot of suffering stems from these tightly held beliefs.

One of the ways I introduce this concept is with two words: AND ALSO

Here’s some examples:

“I can be a good mom AND ALSO not enjoy being with my kids all the time.”

“I can make mistakes AND ALSO be doing a good job as a parent.”

“I can grieve my old life AND ALSO have things I enjoy in my current life.”

How does dialectical thinking help you?
Wanting to get pregnant and struggling to do so ca Wanting to get pregnant and struggling to do so can be incredibly painful, for all these reasons, and more.
If you ever feel overwhelmed, on edge, angry, shut If you ever feel overwhelmed, on edge, angry, shut down, etc when you’re in an environment that has a lot going on, is noisy, or there are sounds that are triggering, you’re not alone!!
Noise overstimulation is a real thing! It took me many years to recognize that this was at the root of some of my own difficult feelings and behaviors, especially when my kids were young, but now that I know, I can be proactive about protecting myself and my energy.
Here’s a few tips I’ve tried and can share with you, but it’s not exhaustive, so if you’ve found things helpful for yourself to manage this, I’d love to hear about it!
